Our own succulents: unique creations
Exclusive and Unique Plants, Our Creations!
At Donsuculentas , we're proud to share with you our team's hard work creating unique succulents. Since 2022, we've been developing our own hybrid succulents , with a careful process that involves everything from hand pollination to sowing and seed propagation.
We have a collection of over 400 botanical succulent mother plants and over 400 hybrids from around the world , allowing us to experiment and create new varieties with exceptional characteristics.
The Process of Creating New Plants
Creating hybrid succulents is a complex and laborious process. Each new hybrid is born through a controlled process of hand-pollination , where we carefully select the plants we want to crossbreed. After pollination, we collect the seeds and sow them under controlled conditions in our greenhouses.
As the seedlings begin to grow, constant multiplication is carried out to ensure the stability and quality of each plant. This selection and development process can take years . Sometimes, only one of the resulting phenotypes from hundreds of seedlings will achieve the genetic stability necessary to be considered a mature variety.
Our First Creations Are Now Available!
Although we started this project in 2022 with few successes, in 2023 we managed to be more methodical and careful in every step of the process, which finally allowed us to see the first successful results: our first plants grown in our own greenhouse . Now you can enjoy these unique creations, directly from our collection!
Why Only 4 Varieties Available?
You often ask us why we only have four varieties available. The reason is simple: we have many more creations in development, but we only release those that we've tested and stabilized for a long enough time. Hybrid succulents require genetic stability, which means we must ensure a plant is strong, stable, and productive enough before offering it for sale.
The selection process is rigorous. Sometimes, out of hundreds of seedlings, only one phenotype meets the necessary conditions to become a new commercial variety. Therefore, although we have many more in the pipeline, we only offer those that we know can maintain their quality and exceed demand.
Tips for Beginners on Creating Hybrids
If you're a succulent enthusiast and want to try creating your own hybrids, here are some tips that will help you in this fascinating process:
-
Start with botanical succulents : To achieve good results at the beginning, it is advisable to start with botanical plants (echeverias are the easiest genus) , since most of them are fertile and will allow you to experiment more easily in the pollination process.
-
It's a complex process : Creating hybrids isn't something you achieve instantly. It takes a lot of testing before you master the process. You'll have to experiment with various combinations and techniques to achieve the results you're looking for.
-
Temperature Control : Hybrid succulent seeds require a suitable temperature range to germinate. Ideally, a temperature range of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius is ideal, which promotes successful germination.
-
Sterilizing the substrate : The substrate you use must be completely free of pathogens. To achieve this, it must be sterilized , and it is also advisable to apply a fungicide to prevent fungal problems that could affect seedling growth.
-
Indirect light for seedlings : The first few weeks are crucial for seedlings. They need indirect light until they develop their first pair of true leaves. Avoid direct sunlight, as seedlings are very delicate and can burn.
The Future of Our Hybrids: More Varieties to Come!
Although we only have a few varieties in our shop right now, we're working on many more. Developing new hybrid succulents is a work in progress, and as we grow and perfect our techniques, we'll be releasing more creations as they become market-ready. Our goal is to always offer you the best of nature, in the form of unique hybrids you won't find anywhere else.
